Magazine of Al-Kufa University for Biology, 2015, Volume 7, Issue 3, Pages 47-54

Gonadotropins (FSH, LH) and testosterone are the prime regulators of germ cell development. Abnormal spermatogenesis is often associated with altered serum gonadotropins and testosterone. the potential relationship between other hormones, including thyroid hormones, and semen quality are still not completely understood. Thus in the present study an attempt has been made to report the degree of associations between thyroid hormones and semen quality. FSH, LH .T. PRL.T4 and TSH.hormones levels were estimated in 39 infertile men of whom 5 were azoospermia, 13 were oligozoospermic, 21 were with asthenzoospermia . Results showed statistically significant differences(P≤ 0.05) in the mean FSH, Testosteron (T.), PRL. And T4. Levels in all the infertile males studied when compared with the fertile controls (n=39). However, there is no significant difference in the mean levels of LH and TSH between the infertile and fertile men. Present study found that though men with abnormal semen profile had slightly higher in T4 concentrations in asthenozoospermia group as compared to those with normal semen profile. This study also show positive correlation between T4 and T. ( R2=0.408) and negative correlation between T4 and FSH was (R2=-0.515) ,T4 and LH was (R2=-0.345).

Magazine of Al-Kufa University for Biology, 2015, Volume 7, Issue 3, Pages 205-214

PTEN tumor suppressor gene is located on chromosome 10q23, consisting of 9 exons, that encodes a 403 amino acids dual-specificity phosphatase with lipids and protein phosphatase activities. PTEN plays a major role in control multiple cellular functions such as cell metabolism, cell cycle progression and cell survival. The PTEN gene is frequently mutated or inactivated in high proportion of human cancer including breast cancer. The aim of this study was to find the correlation between the decrease of PTEN expression with clinicopathological parameters in breast cancer patients.
The current study included 85 sample of Paraffin-embedded breast cancer tissues were analyzed for PTEN expression by immunohistochemistry. We also demonstrated correlation PTEN expression and clinicopathological factors.
The loss expression of PTEN protein was found in 50 (58.8%) of 85 breast cancer tumors, while PTEN protein expression was normal in 35 (41.2%) of 85 tumors. The loss expression of PTEN was correlation with lymph node involvement and age patient, and there was no significant correlation with stage, grade, tumor sizes and histological types.
Conclusion : These results demonstrated the loss of PTEN expression was found in more than half of breast cancer cases and the reduced expression of PTEN protein was correlated with lymph node metastases and may play a role in progression of breast carcinoma , and hence , worse prognosis in the patients with breast cancer. Beside, the detection of the loss of PTEN expression may serve as a useful biologic marker for progression in invasive breast cancer.

Magazine of Al-Kufa University for Biology, 2015, Volume 7, Issue 3, Pages 409-415

Background: Diabetes mellitus is a disease in which the body is unable to produce or to use insulin properly. Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is one of the complications of the diabetes mellitus. Diabetic peripheral mononeuropathy is often divided into two types: mononeuritis and entrapment neuropathy.
Materials and methods: This study include 46 lower limbs of type 2 diabetic patients. The electrophysiological studies was done including motor nerve conduction study for the posterior tibial nerve, short segment study of the posterior tibial nerve and tinel`s sign.
Aim of the study: To evaluate the more sensative technique used in the diagnosis of entrapment neuropathies in the peripheral nerves of lower limbs.
Results and discussion: the results show that from the patient who participate in this study there was a prolongation in the distal motor latency of the posterior tibial nerve by about 30% by using traditional nerve conduction study. The results also show that in 12 limbs from the 46 lower limbs examined there was decreased in the amplitude of the compound muscle action potential of the posterior tibial nerve supplying abductor halluxis brevis muscle by about 30-50% when we pass across the tarsal tunnel and this represent about 26% of the samples, by using short segment study. However, by clinical examination, Tinel`s signs was positive in about 23.6% of the samples.
These results were compatible with the results of many other studies and we conclude that the three techniques are sensitive in the diagnosis of the entrapment neuropathies.
